As a proponent of the north and south nodes and their rulers being the
focal point of a chart, I have based this analysis on that theory. Ralph
Nader is a crusader of democratic reform, I feel, due to his north node of
Aquarius resting in the house of Aries. Humanitarian, socially conscious
ideals are typically Aquarian, and activism is associated with Aries at
it's best (one's north node being his/her best quality). It seems that his
investigative journalism results from his north node ruler of Aquarius in
Aries receiving a square from his natal Pluto. Pluto, unable to accept
matters at face value, insists on looking deeper into the situation and
finding what may be wrong or deceitful. With Pluto placed in the 6th
house, gathering facts in an investigative manner and then proposing, in
writing, a better way of doing things based on these findings would be
appropriate. Mr. Nader should be commended for using his Pluto square in
such a positive manner since there is a choice made whenever an aspect
occurs as to whether to use it beneficially or destructively. His taking
on of corporate giants could be attributed to Saturn resting on his north
node causing him to push for fairness (Venus rests on his north node as
well) and social consciousness in the business world and within
corporations, with Venus also contributing to his environmental concerns.
His work all day Spartan (Arien) lifestyle would again be contributed to
his north node in the house of Aries (a driven work-oriented personality).
With his south node occupying the house of Libra, and the south node
representing what one needs to relinquish in order to achieve their best,
a lack of love interest is appropriate and to his benefit in order to best
achieve his goals (although having a relationship could be an asset as
long as his maintained his independence). Mr. Nader's achievements seem to
result from his ability to adhere to the direction of his north node. The
development of Bell's Palsy in 1986 occurred as Neptune was beginning it's
four year sextile to his south node ruler, his sun in Pisces in the 1st
house. When a planet affects one's south node ruler, the individual goes
through a period of reverse learning, when they must retreat into their
shadow-self, and it is often a difficult time. For him it was a time of
pulling out of the public realm, Aquarius, and heading into Leo, the
personal. The mysteriousness of his illness as well as the involuntary
shedding of tears could be contributed to this transit to his sun in
Pisces, causing a great personal sorrow to reveal itself involuntarily and
unconsciously. It is interesting that his re-emergence into the public
sphere coincided with Neptune's completion of it's sextile to his south
node ruler in the early 90's. His personal work was through, and he was
able to pursue his Aquarian/ Arien passions again.

I agree with all of the above. Saturn in the first house tends to be
disciplinarian, yet Venus there also gives him his sense of humor.
Personally, I think he is one great guy and am wondering how our charts
would interact. My birth data being 11-26-58 at 6:48 p.m. est Cleveland,
Ohio.

In the light of today's NY Times story about his refusal to yield support
to Gore in the tight race, when approached about gun control, Roe vs Wade
and other issues, his nodes, fixed rising sign and moon are interesting as
they offset the mutable sun sign.. His longtime friend, editor of Public
Citizen said "no, I wouldn't approach him on changing his mind. It
would be a waste of time. Ralph is one of the most stubborn people in
America."

This is a general overview as no dates were given for Ralph's brothers
death or onset of Palsy I will not attempt to narrow my analysis to
smaller time frame charts. Nader's 1986 time frame was set up with strong
emphasis on Aries/Mars, Prog Sun at critical 29 deg Aries moving to
partile square with natal Asc within the year, this frequently heralds
health issues, major stressful changes and endings. This prog aspect was
from the 3rd natal house ruled by Mars. Comparing the prog Antiscia points
with natal placings we see prog Mars in conjunction natal Vertex, here is
one explanation/indication of the experiencing of facial muscle paralysis
and Mars being ruler natal 3rd the loss of his brother. Prog Mercury came
to contraparallel natal Mercury indicating further stress in matters of
3rd house/siblings.

With Aquarius rising and Venus, North Node and Saturn in Aquarius in
his first house, it seems natural that Ralph Nader would be attracted to
political activism. His Scorpio midheaven squaring Saturn would add to his
drive and relentless pursuit of his causes. Jupiter in Libra in the 9th
house opposite Uranus in Aries in the 3rd house square Pluto in Cancer in
the 6th would make it easy for him to convince others to follow his lead
and join his cause. Those placements would also be useful in his
journalistic abilities. I believe the investigative part of that is more
ruled by the Saturn/Midheaven square. His Sun, Mars and Mercury in Pisces
in the 2nd house would help him work behind the scenes to discover the
defects and problems he exposed. The Jupiter/Uranus/Pluto T-square gives
him the tenacity to dig deeply into things and be unafraid of
"rocking the boat". The large number of planets in Aquarius and
Pisces and Saturn in the first house, along with no planets in Taurus
could explain his spartan life.
I haven't done any progressions/directions for him in 1986. A quick
look at the transits indicates that Saturn was squaring his Sun and Uranus
was squaring his Mercury. That could certainly explain his health
problems. The Saturn square Sun could have represented the loss of his
brother as well.

1. "Dictating" (?) the terms of a more democratic state.
a) 00:04 degree Aquarius Ascendant with traditional ruler, Saturn, in the
same sign indicates highly developed social conscience.
b) Moon, natural ruler of the public, parallel Chiron, the asteroid which
shows where "unfairness" is experienced. Working on behalf of
the public, Ralph identified and exposed large corporations who abused
their power.
c) Ascendant ruler, Saturn, mutually applying to Jupiter, natural ruler of
the law. Ability to effectively use the legal system.
2. Investigative journalism.
a) Scorpio on cusp of 10th house of profession, ruled by Mars.
b) Mars conjunct Mercury, natural ruler of writing.
c) Mercury in mutual reception with Venus in his first house. Venus rules
9th house of publishing – and law. His work was instrumental in drafting
the Freedom of Information Act.
3. Taking on corporate giants:
a) Mars, ruler of 10th house mutually applying to trine with Pluto,
showing he would effect significant changes through his work. Mars also
rules 3rd house of automobiles. Ralph's first major challenge was to the
automobile manufacturers with his book, "Unsafe at Any
Speed".
b) Mars trines Pluto, representing transformation, in the 6th house of
health. He played key role in creating the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration.
c) Trine between the two societal planets, Saturn and Jupiter. Ability to
comprehend and work within the "big picture".
4. Work-all-day Spartan lifestyle with no love interest to speak
of.
a) Ruler of his 5th house of pleasure is Mercury. It's very debilitated by
being retrograde and peregrine. Mercury is mutually applying to a
conjunction with Mars, ruler of his 10th house of profession. Work is
pleasurable for him.
b) Mars, ruler of 10th, mutually applying to Pluto Rx in 6th house of
everyday routine. He's easily able to work obsessively.
c) His Ascendant ruler, Saturn, in the first is an indicator of extreme
self-discipline.
Advanced placement question: 1986 Loss of brother: Using Regiomontanus
house system, the brother is represented by the 3rd house of siblings,
28:29 Aries. Using derived houses and turning the chart to make the 3rd
the 1st, and progressing the chart to 1/1/86, puts progressed Mars, ruler
of the 8th house of death, exactly on the brother's Ascendant.
Bell's Palsy
1) Progressing Ascendant (1/1/86) is 28:33 Aries, the sign associated with
the head and facial area.
2) Natal 6th house of health has Moon ruled Cancer on the cusp. Natal Moon
progressed to Cancer is in the natal 6th and out-of-bounds by declination
showing an extreme health situation. Cancer is a water sign, thus the
involuntary shedding of tears.
3) Progressed Sun, Mars, Uranus all conjunct the Ascendant.
4) Progressed 6th house of health has Virgo on the Cusp, Virgo, ruled by
Mercury, indicating neurological disorders. Mercury resides in the 12th
house of confinement, in Aries, showing health problems will show up in
his head and severely limit him.

The main features of Ralph Nader's life are clearly shown in his Vedic
/ sidereal chart. Fame, ability and prominence are indicated as ascendant
lord Saturn is very strong in its own sign and, with Venus, forms two
powerful royal yogas. Mercury and Mars form another royal yoga in the
second house of finance and speech.
His concern with big business is clearly indicated as 10th lord
(business) Venus is in the 1st house with 1st lord Saturn. Saturn also
aspects the 10th house (Libra), which is its sign of exaltation.
Therefore, the 10th lord very powerfully affects the 1st house and its
lord, and the 1st lord does the same to the 10th house and its lord. Venus
symbolizes big business as is it is highly materialistic by nature and
likes to accumulate wealth and possessions. Saturn, too, is highly
materialistic, and the aspect of the North Node of the Moon (Rahu) on
these planets adds a strong dose of outer-worldly ambition to both their
modes of operation.
His crusading nature and social concern come from the fact that 1st
lord Saturn is with Rahu in the lunar mansion of Dhanishtha, which is
noted for its virtuous nature, charity, concern for the well-being of
others, and an interest in wealth -- i.e. the way in which corporate
wealth is accumulated. This tendency is supported by the fact that the
ascendant is in the lunar mansion of Uttar Ashada which is noted for
honesty, sincerity, determination, an ability to penetrate (into the
affairs of big business i.e. Venus), and the tendency to start new tasks
and see them through to the end.
The aspect of 1st lord Saturn on the 3rd house (writing and
communications) and the aspect of 3rd lord Jupiter on the 1st house
indicate the strong role that journalism plays in the attainment of his
goals.
Dhanishtha is also known for a strong disinclination towards close
relationships with others, and the presence there of 1st lord Saturn (who
is also disinclined to having close relationships) casting an aspect onto
the Moon in Cancer in the 7th house, clearly shows both his shyness in
public (Moon), and his solitary nature and lack of marriage (7th house).
1st lord Saturn is also very Spartan by nature and the aspect from
ambitious Rahu contributes very strongly to his workaholic disposition.
Neuritis and paralysis are ruled by Saturn, and Saturn is both the
ruler of the second house (face) and afflicted by Rahu, which rules skin
diseases. The tendency for this illness is compounded by the fact that the
2nd house contains Mercury (which rules the nerves) afflicted by both the
Sun and Mars.
As to why 1986 was so eventful, it is no surprise that in the
Vimshottri Dasha (life cycle) system, he started a 7 year cycle of the
planet Mars in October of that year. Mars is the natural significator of
siblings and aspects Jupiter, the lord of the 3rd house of siblings, in
Virgo, the sign of Mercury who is an enemy of Mars and Jupiter, where the
latter is weak. Mars aspects Jupiter from the 2nd house, which in Vedic
astrology is a Maraka or house of death. As stated above, Mars also
afflicts his enemy Mercury (nerves) directly as they both tenant the 2nd
house (face), triggering the onset of the neuritis.

DICTATING THE TERMS OF A MORE DEMOCRATIC STATE: (1) Uranus (the planet
associated with democracy) in Aries (forceful) in the Third House (speech)
at chart's base (giving foundation to his democratic principles). (2)
Angular Uranus in a focal position in a boomerang pattern: Uranus opposite
Jupiter in Libra (social/equity) which forms a Yod through quincunxes with
Mars/Mercury (strong voice) and otherwise-unaspected Chiron (terms and
conditions). The quincunxes in the Yod/Boomerang are wide, but not
insignificant because Uranus is placed at the midpoint between
Mars/Mercury and Chiron. (3) Angular boomeranging Uranus ruling his
Aquarian Ascendant (democratic self-expression) and dispositing his Venus
(through good values), North Node (to the public) & Saturn (through
bossiness).
INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM: (1) Mars (ruler of Third House of
journalistic activities) conjunct Mercury (planet associated with
journalism), both disposited by Neptune in the Eighth House (of deep
investigative research). (2) Also, Mars so placed, also dispositing Third
House Uranus, both aspected by angular Pluto (the planet associated with
deep investigations). (3) Unaspected Chiron (reporter) ruling Virgo cusp
of Eighth House (in-depth research).
TAKING ON CORPORATE GIANTS: (1) Jupiter in Ninth (corporate giants) in
hard aspect to (and therefore challenged by) courageous Mars, an
indefatigable angular Pluto, and Uranus in brave Aries. (2) Saturn at 21
Aquarius (the ability to constructively obstruct) conjunct and at the
midpoint between both the Moon's Node (public expression) and the Neptune
discovery degree (which as pointed out in my commentary on Ted Turner can
manifest negatively with greedy big business associations). (3)
Obstructing Saturn disposits the Capricorn (big business) decanate of
Virgo containing his Eighth House Neptune (business conglomerations and
mergers).
WORK-ALL-DAY Spartan lifestyle: (1) Thrifty Chiron unaspected. (2)
Angular Pluto in Sixth (workaholic) ruling MC (goals) and disposited by
Moon in Leo in Seventh (bringing him emotional satisfaction and pride
through a "relationship" with his work). (3) Tenacious Moon
(ruler of sixth House of work) disposited by Self-expressive Sun in
martyrizing Pisces.
NO LOVE INTEREST: (1) Monkish Chiron unaspected on the 4th/5th cusp,
therefore bringing a certain and remarkable asexuality by being placed
between (but not really in either of) the houses associated respectively
with femininity and masculinity. The rulers of the 4th and 5th are an
unaspected Venus and Mercury which conjuncts Mars but in Platonic Pisces.
(2) Sun (ruler of his Seventh House of partners) in Pisces, opposed by its
dispositor, Platonic Neptune in virginal Virgo in the Eighth House of
sexuality. (3) Venus (one's lovers) unaspected (unattainable) on Ascendant
in cool Aquarius, dispositing unaspected Chiron (as above).
In 1986 he LOST HIS CLOSE BROTHER as progressed planet-of-death Pluto
reached about 14 Virgo in his Eighth House (of death) to oppose both the
following planets and their midpoint: natal Mars, ruler of his Third house
of siblings and Sun, ruler of his Seventh House of partners; and BELL'S
PALSY FROZE HIS FACE as progressed icy Pluto conjunct his natal soppy
Neptune in the Eighth House of loss of control (such that he shed tears
involuntarily). And he seemed to "lose face" himself…

Like his fellow liberal Al Gore, Nader has Sun opposite Neptune (I
wonder how many other liberals have a Sun-Neptune aspect, too!). This will
give him many Pisces traits, since Neptune rules Pisces.
People who are "driven" (no pun intended) usually have at
least one T-Square, and Nader's no exception. His has a foreground Pluto,
the radically transforming planet, interacting with a Jupiter-Uranus
opposition (Jupiter and Uranus working together supposedly make one
something of a "crusader", or so I was told the first time
someone did my chart nearly 17 years ago!) Allow 8* orbs on squares and
oppositions, and this T-Square becomes a Grand Cross that includes the
Ascendant. Nader's Sun and Neptune also make 8th Harmonic aspects to this
T-Square.
Pluto's also in Nader's Grand Trine, which it forms with his Midheaven
and his Mercury-Mars conjunction – no wonder this guy's feisty!
Uranus' presence in the "transforming crusader" T-square
underscores Nader's Sun, which is in Sidereal Aquarius, which Uranus
rules.
Chiron is also in Nader's foreground. Not only is it closer to the IC
than to the 5th House cusp, it trines his Ascendant.
Finally, with Saturn opposite his Moon, Nader's lifestyle is more
easily understood.

Mars is the ruler of the 3rd (brothers) and is conjunct Mercury (3rd
house natural ruler in 3rd). In 1986 Saturn and Uranus were in Sagittarius
squaring these planets, and also his Sun-Neptune opposition. Uranus is
also the planet of nervous conditions and paralysis.
