Information
Annual ingress of the sun into Capricorn, the
2007 Winter Solstice. Astronomically, when the sun reaches 00 Capricorn
00 in the tropical zodiac it is at its southernmost declination. In the
figure “8” movement known as the analemma, the sun appears to station
(hence “solstice” or “standing still”) before it heads northward on its
annual journey to its northernmost point of declination known as the
summer solstice at tropical longitude of 00 Cancer 00.
The Winter Solstice for many marks a time of hope and celebration. It
coincides with the shortest and darkest days of the year in the northern
hemisphere and so from here on in, the amount of daylight increases. The
promise of rebirth and growth is rekindled. Throughout the ages,
cultures and religious practices have marked the time with fires and
candles to illuminate the darkness as a symbol of hope and illumination
at the darkest hour.
Let’s study this solstice chart to see what the next few months might
bring. We’ve calculated the chart for Washington, DC, the US capital. If
you are new to mundane astrology, we refer you to
the quick reference guide below which gives brief descriptions of the
affairs that pertain to each house.

What Do You Think?
Wherever you get your news, you are probably hearing about economic woes,
the disastrous effects of global warming, abuses of power, terrorist threats
political machinations and various dire predictions. Primaries and caucuses
have the nation in a tizzy and many of us are following the candidates’
steps and missteps. Let’s look at the Capricorn ingress chart to see if
there’s any light in the darkness and to forecast what the next few months
might hold for the US.
- When the Ascendant is in Libra, we have a reversal of the zodiacal
order: that is, Libra, the 7th sign, is now in the first position, Scorpio,
the 8th sign, is now in second position, etc. The chart ruler of the
Solstice chart is Venus in Scorpio in the second house. How do you interpret
this set-up? What does it tell us about the mood and focus of the nation?
What issues are likely to be on people’s minds over the next few months?
- What do you make of the exact Sun-Jupiter conjunction at 00 degrees of
Capricorn? Note that the pair is framed by Pluto, still in Sagittarius, and
Mercury at 2 Capricorn. What does this combination of planets in the 3rd
house suggest about affairs of the next few months?
- Let’s study the Midheaven and the 10th house cusp, the places that
symbolizes the country’s Executive Branch. The 10th house cusp is the degree
of the recent Mars retrograde station; the Midheaven is only two degrees
away and Mars is in the 9th house, close by and still retrograde. The moon
which rules all three is in Gemini in the 8th house. How might you interpret
the state of affairs for the country’s executive branch, especially
President Bush? Where are his energies concentrated? Is he a completely lame
duck or is there a revival of interest in any part of his presidential
agenda?
- What if anything in the chart speaks to you about the upcoming primaries
and caucuses?
- The popularity of Congress is at an all-time low. President Bush blames
the legislature for blocking his agenda and the electorate seems to be
disenchanted with Congress’s lack of progress in national and foreign
affairs. What does the chart tell us about the relationship between Congress
and the Executive Branch over the upcoming months? Will Congress continue to
sink in the polls or will its standing improve?
